In the first article, Mark Warner told Federal News Radio an immediate goal is to not get in the way of negotiations between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner on budget reforms.
“One of the challenges, particularly in the aftermath of the election is, even if you’ve got a great plan, it may be hard for the leaders on both sides to immediately agree,” Warner said
Warner led the bipartisan Gang of Six, which proposed a $4 trillion plan last year based on the Simpson-Bowles deficit reduction proposal.
The current resolution expires in March 2013 and Warner wants Congress to pass a long-term budget rather than rely on the more short-term deals.
“Nothing is a crazier business proposition than running the federal government on three-, six- and nine-month continuing resolutions,” he said.
“It’s insane because you can’t plan. If you’re a contractor, you don’t know if that contract will be there. If you’re in the federal government itself, a federal employee, your programs you can’t move forward on. So, from a plain efficiency and cost-savings standpoint, we need to get four-year appropriations bills.”

Another important news story published on ExecutiveGov detailed Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s comments on the cybersecurity bill that has yet to pass the U.S. Senate.
The cyber bill was declared dead by Majority Leader Harry Reid after a motion to end cloture on the bill failed to get the 60 votes required earlier this week.
McConnell said he expects to restart discussion of the Cybersecurity Act of 2012 after the chamber finalizes the defense and intelligence authorization bills.
Sen. Joe Lieberman said Senate Democrats were open to amendments during the cloture debate but Reid only permitted discussions of up to 15 amendments.
