The fiscal year is going to end at the end of this month and for the government to continue to be funded Congress must raise the debt ceiling.
The House of Representatives just passed a piece of legislation which does exectly that but it is tied to defunding President Obama’s Affordable Care Act for one year.
It is now up to the Senate to vote on the Bill which will assuredly be sent back to the House without the “Obamacare” portion taken out.
If Congress cannot agree on raising the debt ceiling, there will be a government shutdown aside from essential services like the military.

U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General Eric Fiel, U.S. Special Operations Command, said at the annual Air Force Association conference this week, that arms makers should speed-up new weapons development.
“We put a man on the moon in 9 years. We can’t even bring a major weapons system in less than that now… Why does it take that long?” the general said.
He also said military budget cuts and the services’ tendency to add more requirements after awarding a contract are also factors in the slow progress of weapons development.
During the conference, Fiel said that the SOCOM intends to acquire manned and unmanned aircrafts for hostile battlefield environments, sensors that can penetrate dense jungles such as those in South America, Africa or Asia, weather tracking sensors in remote areas and lighter and longer-lasting batteries for commandos’ equipment.
