EM Logo5In two big announcements concerning the U.S. federal government, two nominees for important positions within the Defense Department and the State Department will face votes by the U.S. Senate.
Robert Work, current head of the Center for a New American Security, has been nominated to serve as deputy defense secretary.
The 27-year Marine Corps veteran and Navy undersecretary was a member of Obama’s transition team in 2009.
He would succeed Christine Fox who has been serving in the post since Ash Carter left in December.

Max Baucus has been approved by the Foreign Relations Committee for the ambassadorship to China.
The six-term Senator will next face a full vote in the Senate.
He has previously served as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
Baucus will succeed Gary Locke, who previously served as Obama’s Secretary of Commerce before becoming the U.S. ambassador to China.
