Countering transformational advancements in artificial intelligence like Anthropic’s Mythos that point out ‘zero days’ and other security vulnerabilities will require close collaboration between the federal government and industry, according to a top intelligence official.
Dan Richard, CIA associate deputy director for digital innovation, said in a recent NextGov/FCW article that 80 percent of U.S. critical infrastructure is in the private sector, so there is no intelligence solution without private sector collaboration. Security experts have said that Mythos and similar software like OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 can identify flaws that even the smartest humans cannot identify.
This could lower barriers for bad actors and create new and revolutionary hacking strategies.
“We talk about partnership all the time, but this is really different,” Richard said. “This isn’t transactional. This is us, as a country, figuring out with the academic community, with the private sector community and with our public sector partners working together to be able to defeat and take advantage of what I see as an optimal opportunity for the agency, but for the country.”

What Is Mythos?
Mythos is one of Anthropic’s latest models that can find dormant bugs lurking in decades-old software code and exploit them, the BBC has reported. Anthropic has said that Mythos found a bug that was present in a system for 27 years.
Why Is Mythos So Concerning to Federal Security Professionals?
The rapid advancements of Mythos-like AI capabilities has so disturbed federal security professionals that lawmakers have held emergency hearings. These types of models on the minds of technology professionals in recent memory, according to Katie Arrington, IonQ chief information officer and 2020 Wash100 Award winner.
Additionally, federal stakeholders are secretly working around President Trump’s ban on working with Anthropic to integrate Mythos into their cyber defense work, Politico has reported. The Department of Commerce’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation is testing Mythos’ hacking potential, four people familiar with the work told Politico.
Anthropic considers Mythos so dangerous that it previously announced that it would only provide Mythos to a select number of cyber and technology organizations.
Gregory Barbaccia, Federal CIO and two-time Wash100 awardee, is taking a measured approach to Mythos. Barbaccia said, according to CyberScoop, that discovering a vulnerability and successfully exploiting it in a secured environment are different challenges.
“There’s a difference between something that is exploitable in a 4-nanosecond window during a BIOS boot versus what’s the reality of that being exploited in the real world,” Barbaccia said. “We have to understand, just like you could secure your entire threat surface, where are the crown jewels? And how do you protect something, and make sure the protection you’re deploying is worthwhile what you’re protecting.”
